A Beagle representing British Columbia’s Interior made headlines by winning the prestigious Westminster dog show in New York City. Miss P, owned by Lori Crandlemire from Enderby, BC, was named “Best in Show” at the Westminster Kennel Club Show at Madison Square Garden. Besting other strong contenders like an Old English sheepdog, Skye terrier, and Portuguese water dog in the final round, the four-year-old dog, who is the grand-niece of a former winner, also claimed victory in the hound category the night before.
Competing against 2,700 dogs from 15 countries, this year’s win was a significant achievement for Miss P, who is only the second beagle to ever win the competition. Another Canadian competitor, a poodle named Flame from Toronto, also made it to the “Best in Show” finals.
After her win, Miss P, also known as Payton, is ready to retire from the show circuit and begin a new journey as a champion and mother. In an interview with CTV’s News Channel, Crandlemire expressed her joy over the victory but also mentioned that the attention has been a bit overwhelming. Handler Will Alexander shared that the beagle’s show name was inspired by a judge who once called her the “divine Miss P.”
For those who missed the live broadcast, the Westminster Kennel Club Show will be re-airing on Animal Planet today and on Discovery this Saturday for those who want to see Miss P’s impressive performance.
